Employees Give Generously to Help Change Lives in Central Texas
Employees at more than 300 Austin area companies are helping to change people's lives and make lasting community changes through their donations during the United Way Capital Area (UWCA) 2010 campaign. Fourteen Texas companies took their giving up a notch and increased campaign donations.
"Our work focuses on education, income and health – the building blocks for a good quality of life," said Debbie Bresette, President of UWCA. "Donors in Central Texas generously increased their donations this year by nearly $1 million over last year for a total of $16.3 million. We are so grateful for this great community support which will allow us to continue vital services."
"Three companies – Dresser Wayne, Centene Corporation and Best Buy -- saw more than 50 percent increases in donations," said campaign co-chairs Jeff Hahn, principal of Hahn, Texas and Ben Bentzin, a UT lecturer at the McCombs School and a former Dell executive. Donations from each of these companies range between $50-$25K.
Eleven other companies, whose donations total between $1 million and $25K, also increased their giving this year including:
- $1 Million and Up: H-E-B
- $500K-$1 Million: National Instruments
- $250K-$500K: 3M and Samsung Austin Semiconductor
- $100K-$250K: Enterprise Rent-a-Car; Deloitte, Baker Botts LLP, Texas Gas and Dell
- $50K-$100K: Federal Express
- $25K-$50K: Nordstrom
The money raised by UWCA is used to support programs, services and grants in the areas of education, income and health.

More than 8,500 state and university employees participated in the SECC by contributing $2.2 million. Living United
"Being a part of the UWCA Community Investment Review Team has been a learning and growing experience for me. I have been a supporter of United Way ever since I can remember and knew that our donations were going towards causes to help our community. What I didn't know was the detailed criteria that organizations need to submit for these grants and the rigorous review process to get approved for the hard-earned dollars we contribute.
I spent several hours during the three weeks after our initial training, reviewing, analyzing and grading the grant requests along with many other volunteers. Then we all met to talk more about the requests and organizations. In the next few weeks, the board members will review our recommendations.
Wow! I know now for a fact that our contributions are being put to good use in organizations that will truly help our communities for future self-sustainment."

SB6, a program of UWCA, is helping to create lasting change in how children are prepared for school. By 2015, our community's goal is to have 70 percent of Central Texas children enter kindergarten school-ready. Learn more about SB6 here.

Ask Debbie
What does United Way mean by LIVE UNITED?
"In 2008, United Ways across the nation launched the LIVE UNITED campaign. We believe LIVE UNITED serves as a constant reminder that when we as individuals think outside ourselves, we have the power to facilitate change. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of everyone in our community and change lives in the process. The LIVE UNITED campaign is about the power of unity and action. All of our lives are interconnected – no change can occur unless we ALL step forward. That's what we mean when we say LIVE UNITED."
