“The dual benefit of professional skills development and having the opportunity to really understand how your contribution makes a difference is what makes YLS a requirement for me every year. ”–Greg Watson, IBM

The educational component of YLS is specially designed to allow its members to learn about success in both business and philanthropic endeavors from some of Austin's most respected business and community leaders. Current professional development and leadership skill building activities include:

  • Board Builders - A comprehensive two-part seminar which helps prepare young professionals for placement on nonprofit boards
  • Leadership Horizons - A new and innovative three-part leadership enhancement mini version of Leadership Austin’s nine-month course.
  • Lunch with Leaders - A monthly luncheon that is designed to give YLS members an opportunity to network and connect with one another, while providing exposure to a wide variety of issues concerning the community. This is a chance for members to hear from some of the most dynamic leaders in the community.
  • Spanish Class 101 - A fun and informal way to learn the basics of speaking Spanish. Spanish 101 is a six week class which is taught by YLS members who are fluent in Spanish. Not only is it a great way to learn a new language, it’s a great way to meet like-minded individuals.

Leadership Giving Impact

I’m Peg.

Last year, while on leave from my job, I found myself with more free time. I decided I wanted to get more involved in community activities. I attended the fall meeting of the United Way Women's Giving Network (WGN). That particular meeting happened to feature a speaker who talked to us about child well-being and the state of childcare in the city.

The presentation moved me deeply, and I became interested in improving the quality of childcare in Austin.

Also at that meeting, I learned that the WGN did not yet have a system in place to provide its members the opportunities to participate in volunteer activities.
