United Way Capital Area Hosts Early Childhood Initiative With Guest Speaker Libby Doggett
More than 100 people joined Libby Doggett, Executive Director of Pre-K Now in Council Chambers at Austin City Hall to learn how Austin’s early childhood policies and practices measure up to national standards. The event was broadcast live on Channel 6.

TX Education Math and Science Forum Draws Former Mayor and Other Key Community Figures
The new high school math and science standards and their impact on Central Texas in terms of college readiness drew Former Mayor Kirk Watson and other community leaders from all areas of the private and public sectors as a key topic of concern in a forum hosted by United Way Capital Area, United Ways of Texas, and the Austin Area Research Organization on October 3rd.

The breakfast leadership event, attended by nearly 100 business and community advocacy representatives, was held at The Driskill Hotel in Austin. The forum was held in response to recent legislation requiring four years of math and science in the recommended high school curriculum.

Tom Brokaw Shares World Views at United Way Benefit
More than 740 guests gave journalist and author Tom Brokaw a warm reception at a dinner fundraising event at the Renaissance Austin Hotel on Monday, September 25. Presenting sponsor Wachovia Bank brought the respected author and journalist to Austin, and proceeds will benefit United Way Capital Area programs and initiatives in health and human services.

Volunteers and Corporate Sponsors Turn Out in Mass to Celebrate Another Successful Day of Caring
On September 15th, corporate sponsors and volunteers from Austin and the surrounding Central Texas communities came together to support United Way Capital Area's Day of Caring.

Leadership Givers Celebrate the Campaign Kickoff in True Texas Style with United Way Capital Area
On September 8th, nearly 400 United Way Capital Area Leadership Givers came together to celebrate the kickoff of campaign season and have a "good ol' Texas time" at the Texas Disposal Systems Exotic Game Ranch & Pavilion. Dale Watson & His Lonestars played to the crowd of leaders and showed everybody a good time, while reminding the community of the importance in "changing Central Texas...for good."

Partner Agencies Team With United Way Capital Area to Kickoff 2006-2007 Campaign
Partner Agencies came together on August 21 to celebrate the start of the 2006 United Way Capital Area campaign and to kick off their leadership campaigns. Ray Marshall Center and United Way Capital Area Present Findings from Community Agenda Project
On Wednesday, August 16th, community members gathered to hear the findings from research conducted as a part of The Community Agenda Project. Researchers from The Ray Marshall Center at the University of Texas' LBJ School of Public Affairs provided an overview of both phases of the 10 month project which covered a 10-county area.

Local Families Volunteer, Celebrate 'Family Day of Service'
On Saturday June 3, families, students, teachers, and neighbors came together to help make Norman Elementary even better. By landscaping, painting, and cleaning, these terrific volunteers had fun and helped make a difference within the local community while celebrating Family Day of Service, an initiative of Hands on Central Texas.

Dell Financial Services Hosts Charity Golf Event
On Monday May 8, Dell Financial Services hosted its first annual Charity Golf Tournament benefiting United Way Capital Area at the Star Ranch Golf Club in Hutto.

The event's success was due in large part to the almost 100 Dell Financial Services employees who turned out to support United Way and enjoy a great round of golf. Many thanks to Dell Financial Services for hosting this special campaign event!

Survey Finds 3 Out of 4 Texans Believe in Fully-Funded Pre-K Education
On May 8, United Way Capital Area announced its support for the results of a new statewide survey showing an overwhelming majority of Texans want pre-kindergarten (pre-k) education made available for all children.

The survey sought to ascertain the value of pre-k education in Texas
by polling voter's attitudes. The results showed that a majority of Texans are willing to pay higher taxes to fund pre-k programs.

Community Volunteers Award Targeted Grants to Five Local Programs
Five programs designed to address unmet needs or emerging community issues will receive grants from United Way Capital Area through a new targeted funding initiative that supports systemic changes and maximizes community impact.

Grant applications were reviewed by United Way Community Impact volunteers, a group of approximately 60 community volunteers dedicated to meeting needs in Central Texas. A total of $191,000 in targeted funding grants has been awarded for 2005-2006.

United Way Capital Area Recognizes Outstanding Vounteers for Community Efforts
On Thursday, April 27, 2006, six outstanding individuals were recognized for their efforts and volunteerism within the Capital Area community. Special Guest Speaker, and former Austin mayor, Kirk Watson helped award these volunteers a special plaque honoring their contributions to the community over the past year. The recognition event marked the end to a terrific week of celebration and another successful National Volunteer Week.

New Study Asks, "What Do Nonprofits Need to Build Capacity in Their Organizations?"
On Wednesday, April 26, 2006, graduate students from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas and the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M presented findings and recommendations from the Nonprofit & Volunteer Capacity Study. More than 120 representatives from interested organizations attended the presentations.

Calls for Improvement

Austin Mayor Will Wynn, former Chamber of Commerce Chairman Kirk Watson, District Court Judge Jeanne Meurer, State Representative Dawnna Dukes, and United Way President David Balch presented the Report Card to an audience including nonprofit leaders, community activists, and other citizens in the City Council chambers. The Report Card is presented annually during the Week of the Young Child, which is April 2-8 this year.

Tom Hogan is Senior Vice President HP Software, and Mary Scott Nabers is President and CEO of Strategic Partnerships, Inc. Together they will lead a team of more than 40 community volunteers representing the Central Texas business community in mobilizing resources to support United Way’s work.

at Leaders Circle Breakfast

United Way Capital Area recognized our outstanding corporate partners during the Breakfast of Champions, hosted by Jackson Walker LLP. Jim Schneider, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Dell, presented awards to members of UWCA’s new Leaders Circle. Select companies were invited to be part of the Leaders Circle based on their overwhelming support during the 2005 UWCA Campaign.
