President’s Award – Dick Moeller
We are honored to have the chance to recognize Dick Moeller for his dedication to United Way Capital Area’s vision. For more than nine years, Dick has been a United Way Board member. Serving as Board Chair in 2006 and 2007, and the Chair of the 2001 United Way Campaign, Dick has embodied the leadership an organization as large and diverse as United Way needs. When Dick Moeller speaks, people listen, because they recognize that he is both thoughtful and innovative. It was Dick’s leadership in the last year that was most impressive. He guided United Way into a new chapter in our long history, as we adopted the new “Community Impact” model, which was both exciting and challenging. This change didn’t happen overnight. For the last four years, Dick helped lead the effort to better meet the needs of the Central Texas community. He knew that if this change was going to be successful, community volunteers must play an active role in shaping it. Thanks to Dick’s leadership, United Way Capital Area is poised to make long-term changes to Central Texas’ most pressing issues. When not lending countless hours to United Way, Dick is the President and CEO of St. David’s Healthcare Foundation. He is active in his church, and serves on a number of other boards, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest.
2008 Community Catalyst Award – Obed Franco
Obed Franco was a member of the very first Hands On Central Texas Project Leader Training and has been passionately persuading others to engage ever since. An employee of State Farm Insurance, he has led more than 15 projects since becoming certified. His projects have benefited many organizations including Reading Is Fundamental, Head Start of Williamson County, Zachary Scott Theater, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Round Rock. He also organized twelve blood drives for the Central Texas Blood and Tissue Center, earning State Farm Insurance first place in the Corporate Blood Drive, Category B (companies with 500-999 employees). In addition to involving many of his co-workers in volunteerism, he has also recruited others to participate in Volunteer Project Leader Training. Obed demonstrates what it means to be a dedicated and inspirational Volunteer Project Leader.
2008 Volunteer of the Year - Trisa Thompson
Trisa Thompson is Vice President, Legal at Dell, Inc. She is the immediate past chair of United Way Capital Area's Women's Giving Network and has held a number of leadership positions at United Way including a current seat on the Community Board, four years on the Campaign Cabinet and three years on the Women's Giving Network Executive Committee. Trisa's leadership has helped the Women's Giving Network diversify and increase their membership by 70%, solidify the group's mission and vision statements and led the group to formalize its alignment with Success By 6 by supporting "Play And Learn Groups". These free weekly sessions assist low-income families by proving parenting education and pre-school experiences for children. In addition to Trisa's United Way activities she volunteers with numerous other community organizations including Zachary Scott Theater, the Dell Foundation and KLRU.
2008 Spirit of Caring Award – National Instruments
National Instruments is a company that is well known for innovation. Although their primary focus is transforming the way engineers and scientists design prototype and deploy systems for measurement, they are also committed to transforming the way NI employees engage with their community. In the past four years, National Instruments has been instrumental in shaping the improved partnerships between corporations and United Way by focusing on a year-round relationship encompassing volunteering, educational opportunities, and financial investment. The intelligent and passionate employees at National Instruments have played a vital role in ensuring that everyone in Central Texas feels a part of, and an ultimate responsibility for the common good of all.
