United Way Day 2007
Last Friday, Austin Mayor Will Wynn joined hundreds of volunteers at the Rosewood Park Pavilion in east Austin to
declare September 7, 2007, "United Way Day" across Austin. And what a day it was!
More than 800 volunteers spent the majority of the day participating in the Day Of Caring (presented by Freescale)
by lending a hand, being the change, and participating in dozens of volunteer projects across the city.
They built sustainable gardens at a local school, made necessary renovations to several Austin institutions,
helped build (and demolish) homes as part of the Habitat for Humanity project, and much, much more.
After the volunteering was done, it was time for the party to start. Hundreds of friends and supporters of
United Way Capital Area gathered in downtown Austin to celebrate the amazing work going on in this community.
Entertainment from local favorites The Brew, a "fiesta theme," an amazing spread of food and drink, and
inspiring words from United Way staff and volunteers helped foster a "pep rally" theme to the event, and
served as a great launch to the 2007-2008 United Way Campaign, which aims to raise more money, engage more
citizens, and create greater impact in the community than ever before.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the United Way Day events. We couldn't do it without you!

Harwood Summit
Wednesday, September 19
Get to know the name Richard Harwood. As one of the country's leading experts on civic and community engagement,
Harwood is in great demand for his insights into WHY and HOW to get citizens to "be the change they want to see in
the world." On September 19, Mr. Harwood is coming to Austin to do just that...
St. David's Community Health Foundation and United Way Capital Area present the Harwood Summit, kicking off on September 19.
As the platform for a community-wide launch for a long-term campaign to engage greater numbers of people in community
efforts, the Summit will bring together 500 public innovators, thought leaders, and potential volunteers from various
segments of the Central Texas population to hear from Mr. Harwood on why creating greater civic engagement is critical
to our region's success and how, exactly, we can do it.

Blog On!
Everyone knows what a blog is by now, right? Short for "web log," a blog is a chance for anyone - or any organization -
to share their stories in a less formal, more personal way. United Way Capital Area is proud to announce our blog:
unitedwaycapitalarea.blogspot.com
Check it out now. It's a chance for UWCA staffers, supporters, and volunteers to share their thoughts about the
goings on at UWCA and around the Central Texas community. Bookmark this site, and check it regularly, as we'll
constantly be uploading new content and images from UWCA events. This is your "insider's guide" to United Way.
