Fifteen years ago, Catherine wasn't sure how she and her family would be able to handle her younger son's special needs, the result of a tragic incident at the hands of a nanny. A chance conversation with a neighbor led Catherine to uncover an accredited childcare center on Austin's east side that she calls “magical.” A United Way Capital Area Success By 6 partner, Open Door Preschool helped her family begin to heal.

“I thought these girls needed me because it was not a typical mentoring program. I'm lucky to have Jasmine - she's a smart kid and I want this experience to be enriching for her.”
A UWCA donor for 10 years, Jennifer became inspired to become a mentor last year after learning that 1 in 4 students do not graduate from high school. She signed up through United Way Capital Area's 1 Hour for Kids program and was soon paired with 10-year-old Jasmine.

David wants Central Texas children to have the best education possible so they can lead companies such as 3M. This is why he's given to United Way formore than 15 years. He knows that United Way Capital Area is making a difference by investing in children and youth to help them achieve their potential through programs such as Success By 6 and Middle School Matters.
UWCA Helpline
“Being in a situation where I could directly help somebody was really rewarding.
Sometimes it was something small such as providing information on the location of the ice trucks or where they could find fresh water. But these were basic necessities needed for survival.”
During Hurricane Ike, Justin served as a volunteer with the United Way Capital Area Helpline. He was one of several dozen volunteers who answered more than 600,000 calls in just two weeks as thousands were evacuated across the state. Not exactly a typical volunteer experience.

An education advocate for 16 years, Monica Huerta Perez sees first-hand how a quality education can impact a life. With UWCA, LifeWorks is expanding the opportunities for GED students through the new program Ready, Set, Employ, which will help students identify their professional strengths and increase their financial literacy.

Terry Knighton grew up in a small East Texas town where he learned the importance of helping neighbors in need. Whether he's serving as a mentor, donating food or encouraging his 400+ staff to give back Terry embodies the philosophy of getting involved. He is just one of thousands of United Way Capital Area volunteers who give their time,talent, and treasure to help others in Central Texas.
